There will be two pre-conference activities on Wednesday, October 18 at the 2017 MPCA/ACA Conference: The Workshop on Publishing and the St. Louis Beer Tour. Both of these events require registration and payment when you register for the conference.
Pre-Conference Workshop on Publishing
Organized by Katie Wilson & Darryl Clark
Wednesday 18 Oct. 1:00pm-5:00pm
This workshop will be geared toward graduate students and new professionals interested in writing scholarly articles or book proposals. This workshop provides in-depth, “behind the scenes” information about publishing from colleagues and professionals who are broadly published, serve as editors and contributors for journals and books, and write and edit book projects. Featuring discussions with publishing professionals and MPCA colleagues, this workshop offers participants the chance to talk through and ask questions about the publishing process, research and topic ideas, the writing process, and how to ferret out publishing venues.
The cost of the workshop is an additional $35 for materials and supplies.
MPCA Pre-Conference: Exploring St. Louis Craft Beer Culture
Coordinated by Jennifer C. Dunn, Dominican University
Day/Time: Wednesday, October 18
6:00-9:30pm (Tour lasts approximately 3 1/2 hours)
St. Louis is often known for its “big beer” as the home of Budweiser. Even so, a burgeoning craft brewery scene has appeared in recent years. This tour provides the opportunity for popular culture scholars to experience this local craft beer culture, meet some emerging scholars in this area, and taste some of those beers. This pre-conference “field trip” will be coordinated with local Brewery Tours of St. Louis and will include transportation to/from downtown to four of the following breweries: 4Hands, Alpha, Earthbound, Heavy Riff, and/or Urban Chestnut. The bus will provide water and have a cooler where participants can put any growlers they may purchase along the way. Food and beer (beyond the included tastings) are available for additional purchase.
*There is room for 18 people to sign-up for this tour. This will be a popular tour, so we encourage you to sign up early.
**This is meant to be an educational and fun tour. However, if anyone arrives and appears intoxicated, they will not be allowed to board the bus or attend the tour (and will not be refunded their registration payment). If anyone becomes too intoxicated, they will not be allowed to continue on the tour and will be responsible for their own return to the hotel.
