At this year’s MPCA/ACA conference, the terms for Executive Council members Member-at-Large Brian Ekdale and Student/New Professional Rep Kathleen Turner come to an end.

Nominating Committee chair Gretchen Bisplinghoff is putting out a call for nominees for these positions. The Student/New Professional rep usually organizes some of the professional development events but mainly coordinates the mentor/mentee program and meetup. Members at Large do odd jobs as they volunteer for them. Both of these are two-year positions.

Please send your nominations to Gretchen by May 31st. Self-nominations are welcomed. Her email is: gbisplin@niu.edu

On our Facebook page, someone posted this CFP for the upcoming edited volume about the regional politics of the Occupy Wall Street / Occupy Main Street movements:

Broad messages, complicated political positions, and blurred generational and class lines characterize and problematize the Occupy Wall Street movement. As if its connection to the Canadian magazine Adbusters were not enough, this “U.S.” movement’s clearest and most original position may be its denial of position. Beyond “We are the 99%”—a general position against greed and inequality—the “movement” remains difficult to categorize in terms of the red/blue politics of the United States. The picture becomes even more complicated at the regional level where clear, defining symbols of nationalist power and capital are absent.

Our call for papers asks for work which explores the relationship between Occupy Wall Street (OWS) and Occupy Main Street (OMS). How do OWS politics change when moved to Main Street (in terms of organization, agenda, focus, audience, tactics)? How does the complicated positioning of OWS and OMS allow for change?

We seek work which attempts to theorize OWS politics in terms of the local and regional and explores some of the practical issues involved in this movement from the “center” to the “margins” of Ohio, Brussels, Hong Kong, Egypt, and so on. We seek narratives which depict the process by which Occupy Wall Street is translated by grassroots organizers and others outside of Washington.

Deadline: April 1, 2012

Your 300 word abstract and a brief bio (and any queries) should be emailed to Todd A. Comer (Defiance College) and Nathan Crook (Ohio State University) at occupydefiance@gmail.com.

The editors of this collection thought you might be interested in their CFP:

Coeditors Sherry Ginn, Tanya R. Cochran, and Paul Zinder invite proposals or completed essays for an edited collection of scholarly works that explore J.J. Abrams’ science fiction television series Fringe (2008-present). We are interested in a variety of topics as well as diverse disciplinary approaches. Proposals should demonstrate not only a clear methodology and strong thesis but also a familiarity with current conversations and publications about the series. We would be especially pleased to see innovative perspectives on unusual topics such as the show’s paratexts or production elements.

Keen to submit? CFP: Analyzing the Alternate Worlds of J.J. Abrams’ Fringe (pdf).

As you can tell, the website has had a bit of a makeover. We think the new design is more attractive and better organized for your needs. We hope you agree.

You can now find all of the conference administration information (area chairs, grants, etc.) in the Conference section. While this section will be permanent, we will create new sections for each new conference as they come up. Right now, you can still access some of the information from the 2011 conference in Milwaukee and soon, we will build out the section for the 2012 conference in Columbus. Keep an eye out for the 2012 CFP.

If you have any comments or suggestions about the new site, please let us know.
